Here is a crazy thought… Ever pictured a person with a disability doing something that is not seen as disability friendly… Well, I went go carting today and might I just say, it was a blast. I kept getting yelled at to slow down but what can I say, I’m a girl for speed.
You are probably a bit questionable about what you have just read as you know I am legally blind. How can I drive a go cart if I can’t see the road clearly. The thing is, I make it work. Sure, I couldn’t really see where I was going but the course was set in such a way where I could differentiate the tar from the tires lining it. The tires were black which outlined the course and the tar a lighter grey. At first, I didn’t want to cause chaos, but I could not help after my cousins got behind the wheel. It seemed like I would really regret it if I didn’t try. I am SO glad that I did.
Yeah… I know maybe some of you are pointing out the risks that could be behind me on a racetrack with other people and not being able to see all that is around me. Well before you say anything, I did tell everyone working there that I could not see so clearly, I would probably crash at some point. I did, crash I mean. Took the wrong turn and went straight for the carts all parked neatly and innocently in a line. They didn’t know what was about to hit them… neither did I, if that makes it better… But also stating we were the only ones there.
What I am trying to say is that although I have a disability, I will do anything to gain an ability and have the option in partaking in something. Even if it might seem impossible. I believe that no matter the circumstance you find yourself in, you always have a choice. You can either give in to your disability or problem, or you can figure out all the abilities and possibilities that are ahead of you. Something amazing may be lying just out of view of your expectations. You just have to remind yourself that the only thing prohibiting you in your growth is only yourself.
I wish there was a way I could just hypnotize every new person I meet and allow them into a wider look on what they are capable of. Each person has their own battles and sometimes it’s hard to see over that but it’s not impossible. Sure, maybe it’s a cliché, but come on… Just think about how huge the range of abilities there are for you to show off. Sometimes you just need to take your shot and just do something. Don’t think, just do. That’s what I do, and man… It turns out pretty great sometimes. Trust me.
p.s. at the end of this sentence, you will cluck like a chicken…. Did it work? Did my words hypnotize you?
“I have a Disability yes that is true, but all that really means is I may have to take a slightly different path than you.” – Robert M Hensel.
