Hey, you all you beautiful readers. So, I was supposed to have released this on my birthday since it fell on a Wednesday but time got away from me. Better late than never I suppose. This week’s blog is all about accessibility, inspired by University of Pretoria.

I’m jumping straight in because this is something I find should just be importantly to the point. THERE SHOULD NEVER BE A REASON FOR ANYONE TO NOT BE ALLOWED TO DO SOMETHING ESPECIALLY BECAUSE OF A DISABILITY. I don’t know how to make the fact clearer than that… at varsity, I have taken note of implementation that have been put in place to allow students with disabilities to access all they should need on campus. I am SO glad about this, so I had to share it with you all.

I have come across follow peers with disabilities. The disabilities vary from being in a wheelchair to also being on the spectrum of blindness. That fact that there are ramps leading into different levels of buildings shows that the dear university architects thought about inclusivity of people that may be less capable of climbing stairs. This brings so much joy to not only me, I’m sure, but those who use these facilities. It allows a sense of independence and self-confidence and power to still have a chance at attending a university and gaining a higher education. Some people do not have such luxuries due to finances or accessibility, so it is a true blessing.

For learners at the university like me, being on the spectrum of blindness, there is orientation sections. I saw this at my last campus. This is where the disability unit of the university takes the person for a “tour” almost, of the campus, to become familiar of their surroundings. Then they can map out in their minds eye of where to go based on memory, which I think is pretty incredible. Respect of a shout out to those people.

Taking note of all these things just keeps reminding me of how the world has to come to terms with making the places we go in daily life, accessible to those who need it. Whether it be at schools, the workplace or just the mall. There needs to be a sense of inclusivity to all, with or without a disability. Not everyone thinks about these things at first, but it has become a highlighted part of my life. Everyone should be able to access and be mobile in all circumstances, it’s only fair that way.
