Before I begin with today’s blog, I would like to just let you all know that I’m currently writing this in the dinning area of the hotel “Park Plaza in Amsterdam.” There were some technical issues when I tried writing this last night, if you saw the video I posted. Thus, I’m writing todays blog this morning under the influence of the smell of Dutch PANCAKES.
For the past couple of days, I have been touring Amsterdam. It has been one of the craziest holidays that I have probably been on. Several insane things happened over these few days. Mind you, we have only been here four days, yet it feels like forever. Being in Amsterdam is like being in a city that is on fast forward mode ALL THE TIME. You must always keep your eyes open for cyclists on the street, that’s besides the trams, buses, taxis and the regular car traffic.
Being visually impaired makes walking the streets of Amsterdam even more complex and insane. There are hundreds of people rushing by constantly wherever you go but it honestly just adds to the crazy, fun vibe of the city. Talking about the city…. We did a canal cruise around the city and got to experience all the tourist attractions from the view of the water. It was interesting learning all the different facts about the history of the city but it kind of hurt, not having the ability to see all the beautiful views. That did get me a bit down for the day but there were many other things that I focused on instead.
From my own perspective I can say with full confidence that being in a new and beautiful country and not being able to get in the whole, and pure view of all it offers, is not very pleasant. I have been to Amsterdam before on a school trip but this time, having a more personal take on this place, allows for more in taking of the surroundings. Therefore, when all the people around you, constantly express how incredible everything looks down to the finest detail, it hurts not being able to see it al. So, it was a little not to my liking, so it did get me a bit more upset that I usually let myself get in regards to these matters. But I honestly don’t care that I had a mini break down in the middle of the street. I probably looked like one of those people who just can’t contain their emotions when looking at wonderous views, but anyways.
Let me draw your attention to the COZZIEST hotel I have ever stay at. The second we walked through, note the use of the word ‘through” and not “into”, I knew that I was about to experience an amazing stay at this hotel. We are staying at the Park Plaza. They have this huge Christmas tree in their reception. The bar area has a roomy fireplace and the different seating arrangements allows for good socializing for all the guests. We were lucky enough to watch the final football match at the bar and got to experience the game with other guests of the hotel. All the hotel staff is super friendly and helpful. I even got to make a friend with one of the staff members and get some quick Dutch lessons each morning. Each morning there is an exquisite buffet, with an assortment of foods. From breads and pastries to fruits and cereals and always GREAT coffee.
Every morning straight after breakfast, we grab our coats and set off for the next point we want to explore. We pass many little shops that have the most adorable Christmas decorations in the windows displays making everything look so festive. There are lights all over the towns spreading the joy of the jolly mood. You wont fail in finding something that puts you in a good mood. For example, the Christmas market they host with all types of stalls exhibiting delicious smells and a GIANT Christmas tree and ice rink. Everywhere just gets you into the Christmas spirit, which I love.
Tapping back to my mini melt down… I just want to conclude by saying. You are allowed to show your emotions, even if it is in the middle of a foreign country during a family tour around the city. Showing emotion does not make you week. It just shows the bravery you have to express how you feel at the time.
